Decorating with stripes

Decorating with stripes

July 15, 2014 0 By Nordic House

Stripes are one of those rare things in interiors: a style that will never go out of fashion, and that will always give off an air of relaxed sophistication whenever used! As such, they’re firm favourites at Nordic House, both in my own home and of course across our fabulous collection.

The Scandis are huge fans of stripes too, as they are both a subtle and timeless way of adding interest to neutral schemes. Although people often associate stripes with beach-house style and laid-back interiors, they can also be bold! Just the use of bright colours can give a scheme a dramatic feel, whereas paler shades of the same colour (such as grey) on walls are perfect for creating a look that will allow furniture, art and accessories to shine. The width of stripes is also a consideration – the wider they are, the more the stripes will stand out!

Over at the shop, we have some really lovely pieces for those of you who want to add stripes through your accessories. Here are a few of my top picks… (click on the pictures to go through to the store)

First up has to be our gorgeous natural and white striped rug! It’s an easy way to get the same look as in the first picture, without the backache! I think this rug would just look perfect in any room – from the bedroom to the bathroom to the hallway. It’s the sort of piece that you’ll always find a place for, no matter how many times you move house!

Hailing from Denmark, where beach house style reigns supreme, these cushions are available in three designs: a Button Cushion, Tie-On Seat Pad and a Box Cushion. They would work equally well indoors or out! Today I’m loving them in black, but we also have them in grey and natural colours so you can pick whichever takes your fancy!

And while we’re on the subject of the great outdoors, I had to sneak in a mention of our fabulous hammock!

Which goes perfectly with…

…our matching picnic blankets. Our blankets have a thin stripe on one side and a lovely broad stripe on the other, and come in three colourways: grey, pale blue and dark blue.

Throws are another great way of adding stripes to a decorating scheme without any commitment. We love our deliciously soft grey and white striped throw – in 100% cotton it has a lighter feel that makes it perfect for the summer.

Last but very definitely not least is our lovely striped pitcher. Ideal if you just want to add a hint of stripe to your dining table or kitchen. Available in blue or natural, this simple Scandi jug has a real nautical feel and is just perfect for holding summer blooms.
